What is Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers (2021) Movie

This Fathom Event is in theaters for a select time this Christmas season 2021.

It features the following artists: King & Country, Phil Wickham, Brandon Lake, Maverick City, Cain, Matt Maher, The Bonner Family, One Voice Choir, and more.

These artists perform new and classic Christmas songs. You will hear from the artists and cast members from The Chosen who speak on the message of Christmas, a time period in the Bible, or what a song means to them.

This unique Christmas experience is awe-inspiring, heart-changing, and a powerful message of hope and peace in a dark world.

Additionally, the story of Jesus’ birth is portrayed in a way you haven’t seen before. Just as The Chosen brings the Bible characters to life, this special Christmas edition makes Mary and Joseph very real. From the dirty manger to riding on a donkey into Bethlehem, we see Joseph’s frustration, Mary’s humble demeanor, and the birth of our Savior.

Interwoven into the story of the birth of Christ, we see a future (AD 48) Mary visited by Mary Magdalene. The mother of Jesus is ill and asks Mary Magdalene to take a message to Luke who has been writing the account of Jesus’ life. Jesus’ mother wants Luke to include the Magnificat – her psalm penned in Luke 1. She wants the world to know her praise to God.

Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers Movie Review: What Parents May Want to Know

While Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers has little content that is not suitable for children, not all kids will be content to sit through this movie. Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers is a lot of music, Biblical monologue, and a short movie that shows Mary in labor. In one scene Joseph uses a slang term (bull droppings) instead of swearing.

There were children in the audience and most-watched without a problem. The children behind me ate the entire time (and kicked my seat). I thought, their mama probably needs to see this more than I do. I did attend with a small child, and he loved it. You know your child’s ability to sit through a 2-hour movie. This is not fast-paced and animated.

This two-part film depicts the musicians and a lot of Christmas songs. Additionally, we hear from actors who talk about the names of God: Adonai El-Roi (The God Who Sees Me), Jehovah Raah (The LORD is my shepherd), Jehovah Shalom (The LORD is our peace), and Emmanuel (God with us). The second part of the film shows the birth of Christ.

Why You Need to See Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers

Are you discouraged? Is the weight of the world bearing down on you? We are currently living in a dark time. The Chosen compares this dark time to the time period before the birth of Christ. The people of God were waiting for a Savior. Up to that time, God had given them prophets so they could hear from God, but the prophets were silenced. God appeared silent.

In this silent time, life seemed scary and God was distant and far away. The birth of Christ was a shift. God came to us, to dwell among us, and He did it in the lowest and most humble way!

Still not convinced to see it? The musical choices are amazing. This is a CD you will want to buy!

Go Tell It on the Mountain by King & Country will send chills down your spine.

I cried the entire way through Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Matt Maher.

The Bonner Family performing How Great Thou Art is worth the price of your ticket!

Great summary – thank you for this!

We took the family last night, and our kids (3, 6 & 12) sat well through the entire production – maybe we got lucky 🙂

Personally, although the music portion was all phenomenal, the two movie narratives were particularly well done and very touching. It was a little “odd” to have a black Joseph since we know that he was a Hebrew, but again the acting and message delivered was profound and very moving/inspirational! 5 stars from my perspective 🙂

  2. Movie was not like it is in the Bible
    Short movie by the way
    To much music
    Very disappointed

While the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus is very short, obviously the director took creative liberties. We do not know what Joseph and Mary talked about while traveling to Bethlehem. We also do not know who told Luke Jesus’ birth story or when the account was given to him. The movie is simply one persons interpretation of the events in the Bible.
