When researching about the History of the Nativity Set I came across some bizarre and truly unique Nativity sets. So I am bringing you the most bizarre, weird and unique collections of that first Christmas night that I have found on the internet!

Unique Nativity Sets Made A Variety of Materials

The most unique series that depict the birth of Jesus that I have found are made out of the following materials: wood, resin, yarn, felt, marble, porcelain, plastic, balloons, sand, food – yes even food! The food ranges from chocolate to cheese. Those are the more normal food ones. Imagine an intricately carved butter birth scene. I hate the texture of Spam and can’t even stand to touch it. There is no way I would be making a Christmas crib scene out of canned Spam.

Unique Nativity Sets – Animal Editions

Think of an animal – any animal – you will find a Christmas scene for that animal. I have found Bears, Birds, Cats, Moose, Cows, Mice, Chickens and more. Would you put up a Christmas Eve scene fashioned after animals?

What about inanimate objects such as Rubber Duckies or Snowmen?

In my quest for the most bizarre birth scenes, I found Nesting Dolls and a Lenox Charlie Brown edition. Imagine Joseph as Charlie Brown and Lucy as Mary. Of course, Jesus would be Woodstock!

Somewhere somebody has modeled a scene of that first Christmas from your favorite characters – Veggie Tales, Star Wars, Marvel Characters, and Barbie dolls are just some of the ones that can be found online.

Unique Food Creations

Chocolate – you can find some to buy or you can make your own. This set looks delicious, but who in your family would eat baby Jesus? I would be eating it faster than I could make the Christmas crib. And someone even took the time to fashion Jesus’ birthday out of Marshmallows. That one would quickly be eaten in my house.

Bacon and Spam: I wonder who finds the time to make a bacon recreation of the first Christmas. Furthermore, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were Jewish and would not have been anywhere near pork.

Sugar Cookies, Gingerbread cookies, or buy your own cookie cutters and make your own specialized cookie manger.

Cheese: A Nativity collection made by with blocks of cheese is certainly unique.

But then there is this more elaborately carved Cheese creche commissioned by Pilgrims Choice cheddar cheese. It was intricately carved out of 88 lbs. of cheddar cheese by Prudence Staite. Make sure to check out all the wonderful photos of her carving. This woman takes her cheddar cheese art seriously.

How about a sock monkey scene of that first night in Bethlehem? Or one made out of Bottle Caps.

The Unique Nativity Sets have become a whole industry. I found Pinterest boards dedicated to food sets, bizarre models representing Christ birth, animal manger scenes, and more! Apparently, my fascination with how society represents the Birth of Christ is growing and I even have my own Pinterest board. Make sure to follow along as I add more to it. Two phrases that should never go together – “Deviled Eggs” and “Baby Jesus,” FOUND HERE! In fact, it appears that these were made for a baby shower, but then it was pinned to a board labeled Nativity!

Places to Find The Birth of Christ

My cradle with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph sits under my tree, but people place them all through the house. Indoors and Outdoors. There are manger scenes in churches, in town squares, and recreate the first Christmas with live animals and real people. Communities all across the world feature Live Nativities. But you can also find Nativity Sets underwater. There is an aquarium in Spain that has displayed the birth each year since 1995. It is placed within the shark tank.

These AMAZING outdoor nativity scenes feature a sand and an ice sculpture!

Vera over at Lady and the Blog talks about her grandmother’s oversized Jesus that she put out each year! This was such a special post, but it is something very different than what I grew up with.
