SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SEE

SOLO A STAR WARS MOVIE?

Most likely you came here looking for honest answers without spoilers. Should you take your child to see Solo? Is it a suitable movie for children? And you will get your answers. But first let me tell you just a little bit about myself. I am a mother of 5 children ages 30-13. I have written movie reviews for the last 15 years. Quite frankly, I am afraid to go back and look at old reviews, because my viewpoints have evolved over the years – the years of making mistakes and realizing that those mistakes have lasting consequences.

I allowed my three oldest children to watch things that I later realized were not the best choices. And I vowed to do a better job with my two youngest sons. My reviews are born out of a passion to help you avoid mistakes too!

Should You Take Your Child to See Solo? And is it even a good movie?

Solo answers your questions about young Han and how he becomes the man we meet in Episode IV. Throughout the movie there are scenes you would expect to find: When did Solo acquire the Millennium Falcon? How did he meet Chewbacca? And it answers those questions in an entertaining manner.

THE GOOD:

Several funny scenes will have you laughing out loud. Alden Ehrenreich delivers a Solo that is believable. Although he doesn’t capture Han’s voice, he does capture his style. Donald Glover manages to act, sound and look so much like Lando that you will instantly love him in his role.

Questions are answered, and you are left with a satisfying feeling regarding a young Solo, but there is enough of a cliffhanger that you will want to know more of the story. I do anticipate another Solo story.

THE “I MUST MENTION IN CASE YOU NEED TO KNOW”

This movie has scenes with passionate kissing, gambling and drinking.

A robot suggests that “she” has a relationship with a human character.

There is minimal foul language (a few – sh–, a–, he–).

Some revealing outfits show cleavage.

THE THINGS YOU DO NEED TO KNOW:

Solo is an intense action movie. I read no “reviews” before I see a movie so I can formulate my own recommendation, but I did see one paragraph where the reviewer said, “You can take children ages 5 and up to see this movie.” OH MY – NO, NO, NO!!!!

This movie starts off intense, ends intense, and stays intense almost the entire way through. This is one of the few movies I have seen in my lifetime that was hard to predict what would happen next. This inability to successfully predict the next outcome keeps you on the edge of your seat and in suspense. It also makes for a great movie. But these intense scenes are difficult for children to navigate.

There are fight scenes, intense action scenes, and evil, ugly villains. There is a gross, huge, scary creature.

Swords, lasers, and gun fights are plenty in this movie. Blood is minimal, but the death of several characters occur on and off screen. There are the necessary Tie-Fighter chase scenes that would be expected, but because this is a prequel, you know that Solo will not be killed or permanently disfigured!

The ability to tell the “good” guys from the “bad” guys is clearly more difficult in this movie. This is a time of general lawlessness. Every man for himself rules this corner of the universe.

THE RECOMMENDATION:

So should you take your children to see Solo A Star Wars Story? I wholeheartedly recommend this movie for Star Wars fans ages 9-10 and up. While this movie is rated PG-13 we will not be letting my 13 year old autistic child see it on the big screen. He is much more sensitive to violence and fighting, and so we will wait until it comes out on Blu-Ray to have him watch it. And my 25 year old daughter will never see it because she doesn’t like intense action films.

Also some of the messages in Solo, young children don’t need to see. “Trust no one” is one of these messages. In addition, the level of betrayal in this movie may be confusing to young children. You may argue that they will learn these lessons anyway through life circumstances, but the way the betrayal plays out onscreen, and the way things are dealt with is not healthy conflict resolution that children need to learn.

  1. OMG I can’t believe the final episode is coming out! Did you happen to watch the new trailer that came out yesterday? I’m looking forward to Rey giving Kylo Ren the beat down!

Hard to believe that it will be over. Yes, I watched the trailer, and I cried. I cried when I saw Leia. Carried Fisher is missed and leaves a hole in our hearts. Personally, I think nothing can compare to Luke, Leia, and Han.
