Years ago, I used Reading Eggs and loved it. We used it for 4 years, and I paid for that subscription. But sometimes you have to put something aside and re-evaluate. I recently decided to try Reading Eggs again, and see 1) If Jack-Jack has advanced,  and 2) If this is still a good fit for an older child on the autism spectrum. This review of Reading Eggs Phonics and Mathseeds is based on the 12-month subscription.

Reading Eggs is a product of Blake eLearning, Inc. This company has won multiple awards for the innovative way of teaching children reading and math.

How We Have Used Reading Eggs and Mathseeds in our Family

Jack-Jack is 15 and autistic. He has significant learning disabilities. He needs constant review to maintain skills and has great difficulty retaining information.

I started off by having Jack-Jack take the Reading Eggs and Mathseeds placement tests. These tests evaluated his skill level and started him right where he needed to be.

For Mathseeds that level was close to the level was right where I thought he would be. However, for Reading Eggs he placed far below his level. I waited for a few days and retested him. I know that there are many factors that determine his “test-taking” abilities and some of those include his mindset and other things going on around the house at the time of taking the test.

Things I have Learned Using Reading Eggs

  • It can be helpful to repeat a program that you have already used when teaching a child with autism.
  • While reviewing this program, it became evident that Jack-Jack lost some skills over the past few years as he gained other knowledge.
  • Watching Jack-Jack use Reading Eggs a second time is enlightening. Things seem so much easier for him this time around. This is encouraging.
  • Reading Eggs (the entire program) continues to grow and expand offering additional components for younger and older children.
  • Easy to navigate and use.

Would I Recommend Reading Eggs?

I recommended Reading Eggs when I paid for my own subscription. So the answer is YES!

I would be hard-pressed to find a scenario where Reading Eggs would not fit.

Review: Final Thoughts about Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is aligned with Common Core.

Additionally, this is a secular company that does have elements of that may offend some families. In one lesson, the question was asked, “Does Santa ride on a sleigh?” While this does not bother my family, I mention it because I know there are families out there that want a “Christian” curriculum.

Overall, this program is great for teaching reading and math, but even if you have other curriculum you are using for those subjects, this is a fun way to engage your child/children in those subjects for additional review and to supplement what you are already using.
