Do you ever wonder what it would be like to grow up in a different place or time? I am fascinated with history and cultures around the world. While I would love to travel more, it just hasn’t fit into our lives, so when I get the chance to read about cultures and other time periods to my kids, I jump on it. When I was given the opportunity to review Carole P. Roman’s assorted series by an award-winning children’s book author, I was excited to say yes. I want to make learning fun with the best educational books for kids!

Culture & Countries book review

I received the following books:

Ancient Cultures: If You Were Me and Lived In Ancient China

Books on current countries: If You Were Me and Lived In Mexico

If You Were Me and Lived In Norway

If You Were Me and Lived In Brazil

But before I tell you about the books, let me tell you a little bit about the author!

Who is Carole P. Roman

Children’s author of fun and educational books for kids, Carole P. Roman is an award-winning writer. She has published over 50 books ranging from princesses, pirates, countries, cultures, and even jokes. Roman is a mother and grandmother. I imagine she has read a lot of books to her own kids, and now she writes so we have more books to read to ours.

I selected one book from the series “If you were me and lived in. . .An Introduction To Ancient Civilizations Through Time” and 3 books from the series “If you were me and lived in…A Child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World.”

THE FINEST EDUCATIONAL BOOKS FOR KIDS:

Carole P. Roman’s books are not only fun, but they are full of learning and colorful pictures. These books are sure to capture your child’s attention and want them to continue to find out more about the world around them. The following books were the ones I have chosen to read to my son:

“If You Were Me and Lived in Ancient China”

This book is set in Ancient China in the year 150 AD. It compares what a city in China looks like now with a city 2000 years ago, and then proceeds to tell you what life would have been like – What you might have been named, who was Emperor, life if you were rich or poor, what you ate, who lived with you, what you ate, and even what job you were destined to have based on the job your father had.

“If You Were Me and Lived in Brazil”

This book is an introduction to the country of Brazil which is the largest country in South America. Find out what it would be like to live in modern-day Brazil. I love the above photo which is very relevant – if you are visiting Brazil, you would be taking a photo with your cell phone today. These pictures are very relatable to children.

“If You Were Me and Lived in Norway”

These books all follow a similar format, but with facts about each country.

If you were me and lived in Mexico book by Carole Roman Educational books for kids
Mexico and its culture

“If You Were Me and Lived in Mexico”

From these three books find out facts such as which country produces the most coffee in the world, what the capital of each country is, and what the money is called in each culture. Additionally, you can find out about the food each country eats, holidays celebrated, famous landmarks, and activities and games played in each country.

I read these books alongside my son Jack-Jack, my 15-year-old with autism. The level of these books is Grade 2-4, which is right where he is reading! He enjoyed them, and it will be interesting to see how much he retains from each book as we continued to learn about different cultures this year. I intend to purchase more of Roman’s books to use with other countries that we study.
