BEST GLUTEN-FREE BREAD
When I first went gluten-free, it was for an elimination diet. I had to eliminate all grains, dairy, nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant), seeds, sugars, and nuts. Eventually, I started to add foods back in, and when I did, I found that I couldn’t eat gluten, peppers, corn (I already knew this one), lentils, and garlic. I also have to watch with beans. But gluten – that one hurt. I wanted so badly to find substitutes, but it was hard. Most things tasted like cardboard, and yummy tasting bread was out of the question. Finding the Best Gluten-Free Bread seemed out of the question.
MY QUEST FOR THE BEST GLUTEN-FREE BREAD
After begin gluten-free for some time, I found some items I liked, but bread and pizza were tough. In the beginning, I kept going back to gluten. For the first year or so, I would begin to feel better and say, “I’m cured.” But as soon as I would eat gluten again, all my symptoms would return with a vengeance. So I adapted to eating crappy bread because I really wanted to feel better. Most the time, I ate no bread, but once in a while I would buy a loaf and remember why I quit eating bread.
Then one day, I was walking along the food aisle in my local Target and saw Canyon Bakehouse bread. It was gluten-free, and there was something about the name and packaging that drew me in. I made sure not to get my hopes up too high. I remember that day – taking the package home, carefully opening it, and tasting the bread. HMMM, “This is great,” I said to myself.
After that, every time I was in Target I would look for Canyon Bakehouse, but sadly I only found it occasionally. When I did, I would buy every loaf (usually 2-4) to pop in the freezer. And then I did something revolutionary. I looked online. And I found that my local Target had been holding out on me. Canyon Bakehouse just doesn’t have 2 or 3 different types of bread. They have such a variety of loaves of bread, bagels, English Muffins, and even brownie bites, that I was hooked.
I can now order my favorite gluten-free bread online. When the package arrives, I put all but one coveted loaf in the freezer. As I finish one loaf, I have another one waiting in the wings.
THE TASTE OF CANYON BAKEHOUSE GLUTEN-FREE PRODUCTS:
My absolute favorite bread is the Sweet Hawaiian. Oh be still my beating heart – my beloved Tuna Melt is now back in my life to savor every delicious bite. Lest you think I am being overly dramatic – this bread is too die for.
My daughter’s favorite is the Bagels, and I wish I could say how great they taste, but they are usually gone before I even get a bite. The Everything Bagel looks yummy, but all that is left are the crumbs on the baking sheet. I don’t know how my daughter does it, but even before I realize she has cracked open a package of bagels, they are gone.
The brownie bites were devoured before I could get a great photo. These would make a delicious base for a dessert, or heat them and put a scoop of ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped topping and have a brownie sundae.
