Thanksgiving Books for Kids
What do you do each year for Thanksgiving? Is there a show you watch? Or a food you need to eat? For me, Thanksgiving is a combination of those things. Food, shows, and more. In fact, one of the things I do every year is selecting a handful of Thanksgiving Books to read to my children. Some I have loved and purchased and others I have checked out of my local library. Here is my list of musts for Thanksgiving books for kids.
THANKSGIVING BOOKS FOR KIDS: PICTURE BOOKS
Turkey Trouble by Wendy Silvano
This adorable book has Turkey trying everything he can to avoid being eaten for Thanksgiving by coming up with disguises. A Must Read!
The Story of the Pilgrims by Katherine Ross
This beginner story of the first Thanksgiving is great for young historians.
Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet
What family hasn’t watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? It is a Thanksgiving tradition that shouldn’t be ignored. Make the story of the balloon and the puppeteer who started this amazing tradition.
Squanto’s Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving by Joseph Bruchac
Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf
This delightful story is based on one’s family real Thanksgiving tradition of having their Thanksgiving dinner in the woods. It is important for children to understand that everyone celebrates differently, and there are wonderful illustrations.
The Thanksgiving Story by Alice Dalgliesh
This version of the First Thanksgiving was written in 1954 and is one of my favorite children’s picture books for Thanksgiving.
And just because we like to have fun:
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey! By Lucille Colandro
The classic funny story about an old lady who swallows various odd things is retold in the Thanksgiving setting. This old lady swallows a turkey, a ball, a hat, and more Thanksgiving items.
THANKSGIVING BOOKS FOR KIDS: CHAPTER BOOKS
Squanto, Friend of Pilgrim by Clyde Robert Bulla
This chapter book is great for adding a little more detail about the life of Squanto, the man who saved the Pilgrims from starvation. He was truly a friend to them.
If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 by Ann McGovern
Ann McGovern’s no-nonsense approach to history is a delight for young and old.
