MADELEINE L’ENGLE – A WRINKLE IN TIME

BOOK REVIEW & Disney ACTIVITY PAGES

Madeleine L’Engle A Wrinkle in Time was first published in 1962. Disney released a made-for-television film based on this book in 2003, but now Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time for the big screen is being released in theaters. How is is that I never read this book before?

A Wrinkle in Time has been read and reviewed hundreds of times over the past 56 years. Even though I was a voracious reader throughout my years in school, I somehow never read it. I had even assigned it for my oldest son during our homeschooling years, and yet I still didn’t read it.

In February I attended Disney’s Social Media Moms Celebration. The upcoming movie based on the book was promoted, and I even watched an extended clip during our visit to Hollywood Studios. And as fate would have it, during the conference as we were hearing about the upcoming Disney movies, my table mate Jessica mentioned that A Wrinkle in Time was one of her favorite books.

I was prompted to by the book because of her contagious enthusiasm. As soon as I returned home, I rushed out to buy A Wrinkle in Time, and I am so thankful that I did.

Did you know that when Madeleine L’Engle first wrote A Wrinkle in Time, she was rejected by 26 publishers before she found someone to publish it, but she didn’t give up, and this book went on to be the Newbery Medal Winner in 1963. Make sure to read my review, It’s Your Universeby Ashley Eckstein. She has a very similar story about a product line. (Most successful people hear the word “NO” many times before they finally accomplish their goals).

MADELEINE L’ENGLE A WRINKLE IN TIME BOOK REVIEW:

Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time Book, Disney's Wrinkle in Time Guide to the Universe, and 4 Tickets for the Movie
At the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, I was given tickets to see the movie and the book, A Guide to the Universe.

The story centers around the Murry family. Mr. and Mrs. Murry are scientists, but Mr. Murry has been missing for several years. Thirteen year old Meg Murry is defiant and stubborn. Her attitude toward school and the people around her is made worse by her father being missing. Her younger brother Charles Wallace seems to have the unique ability to read her mind, but he is considered odd and dumb by most of the people in town. The only “normal ones in the family” are her 10 year old twin brothers, Sandy and Dennys.

Meg, Charles Wallace, and their neighbor Calvin go on a quest through time to find Mr. Murry. They are helped by three eccentric neighbors, Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Which and Mrs Who. And the core theme of the book is one of good versus evil. The author was a Christian, but believed that God saves all and not just the Christian. Because of the overarching religious tones of the book, it was banned by some schools for promoting religion, and because of Madeleine L’Engle’s universal beliefs, the book was banned by some private schools for not being in line with their form of Christianity.

My Recommendations for A Wrinkle in Time:

I encourage you to read the book whether or not you plan to see the movie. As you read the book, keep in mind that it was written in 1962 before Star Wars, Star Trek and Back to the Future. These concepts were not talked about like we do today. I found the book intriguing and read it in less than 24 hours.

I am excited to see the movie especially after reading the book. This book has a recommended reading age of 10 and up. But is a classic that should be read by young and old alike. Have you read the book? Do you want to see the movie? Drop me a line and let me know.
