CTCMath Review Homeschool Curriculum – Grade K-12
How will I ever teach math? That is the number one question about curriculum I get from moms who are thinking about homeschooling. Unless you love math, it can seem so overwhelming. Usually, parents aren’t concerned about the early years, but the thought of teaching higher math sends most parents into a panic. However, my main concern wasn’t how to teach higher math. It has been how to teach math to children who don’t love it as much as I do. Enter CTCMath. This review of CTCMath is based on the 12-month Family Membership.
I have to be honest about CTCMath. I have been homeschooling for 27 years, and I really thought that I would never use CTCMath. You see, I had objections to an online math curriculum. I know I am set in my ways and thought that textbooks or workbooks were the only way to go with math.
Before we delve into my hang-ups and how I am set in my ways when it comes to math curriculum, let me tell you a little bit about CTCMath.
What is CTCMath
First off, CTCMath is a complete online math curriculum. It covers Kindergarten through Calculus, and you can teach one child (with a single membership) or multiple children (with the Family Membership). This is a full math curriculum. The best part – one price covers your entire family.
Short video lessons approximately 4-9 minutes make up each lesson. This is followed by questions to see how well your child learned the information presented.
The parent/teacher portal allows you to see each child’s progress at a glance.
How We Have Used CTCMath in our Family
Child 1:
Marcus is 17 years old and wants to graduate in 2021. However, he has “holes” in his math learning which has prevented him from moving forward with math.
The short lessons that build on one another have enabled him to really grasp Algebra I. He is working on completing Algebra 1, but decided to start Geometry. These are two courses that can be completed at the same time.
Because of this, Marcus can complete Algebra 1 and Geometry simultaneously and I don’t have to spend more money on another math course. (One yearly fee for the Family Membership with access to K-Calculus is a big plus).
Child 2:
Jack-Jack is 15 and autistic. He has significant learning disabilities. He has needed constant review. Because of this I started him with Grade 1.
He is really moving through the lessons which helps boost his confidence.
Additionally, Jack-Jack has learned how to count money for the first time! YEAH – this is definitely a win.
He is still struggling with counting coins. He knows the names of all the coins, but cannot remember the worth of each piece. Why is the nickel bigger than a dime, but is worth less money? This obviously is a sticking point for him.
Things I have Learned Using CTCMath
- You can teach an old dog new tricks. I am absolutely loving CTCMath.
- Having a complete math library (K-Calculus) at my disposable is fantastic.
Would I Recommend CTCMath?
The short answer is absolutely!
The longer answer is: CTCMath fits my family. The teacher with the adorable Australian accent makes me think of vacationing somewhere I have never been.
All kidding aside. Being able to access a level and teach exactly where my children are learning is life-changing. No more buying curriculum, and then having to put it aside because you find that your children need a lower level (or a more advanced level).
It is all right there where you need it.
Final Thoughts about CTCMath
This is the math curriculum that we needed at just this time.
After using dozens of different math curriculum, I can say that Marcus and Jack-Jack are both thriving with CTCMath.
When it comes to tears over math lessons, I haven’t cried at all using CTCMath! (Neither have my children!)
I love the one price for the entire family and the entire collection of math levels. This is a game-changer.
I realized that I have never looked at CTCMath because I am super stubborn and set in my ways and need to be open to new things when it comes to homeschooling.
