Copycat Disneyland Pineapple Dole Whip Donut Recipe

Disclaimer: I have not tried Disney’s Pineapple Dole Whip Donuts. I saw them in a photo! I knew I wanted them. but I also know that I am at least a year from visiting Disneyland, CA, and these donuts were a limited release item. So I decided to try my hand at creating this infamous Pineapple Dole Donuts. I attempted to make my own Pineapple Dole Whip Donuts that looked close enough to the Disneyland version, but even Disney fans complained that these were too sweet. So I concocted my own version – less sweet, more like a Dole Whip. Below is my copycat recipe of Disney’s Pineapple Dole Whip Donut as seen in Disneyland.

If you don’t know what a Pineapple Dole Whip is, let me tell you about my favorite Disney treat! It is a dairy-free, pineapply soft-serve dessert that has an amazing following. There are websites devoted to finding and eating the Pineapple Dole Whip. For me, it is a must eat treat every time I am at Walt Disney World.

WHERE TO FIND A PINEAPPLE DOLE WHIP AT DISNEY

This delectable treat is available at Walt Disney World Resort in the 1) Magic Kingdom at Aloha Isle, near the Enchanted Tiki Room (you know you are now singing “In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki room), 2) at the Pineapple Lanai at the Polynesian Village Resort, 3) at Tamu Tamu in Animal Kingdom, 4) Marketplace Snacks in Disney Springs, and a few other locations throughout Walt Disney World. There are also  locations at Disneyland, CA to get this coveted snack, and at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii. And there are locations throughout the world to get a Pineapple Dole Whip. Periodically it is available at a yogurt shop near me, but honestly it does not have the Disney taste. There is something about basking in the sun with my Dole Whip float while taking in the sights, sounds and smells that make eating the Dole Whip a magical experience.

Disneyland sells fantastic donut treats at their Main Street Coffee Cart. To get an idea of some of the delightful mouth-watering items that have been offered there, visit the Disney Parks Blog. Last month Disneyland upped their game when they came out the Dole Whip Donut. It is a yeast donut topped with Pineapple Icing and Marshmallow Meringue. I have worked tirelessly to create my own version of this delectable treat.

After reading online that these donuts are super sweet I decided to down the sugar in my homemade version. I made several styles and my family tasted them all. I tried it with yeast donuts and gluten free donuts. Further experimentations included pineapple juice and crushed pineapple. And for toppings I made them with toasted marshmallow meringue and with homemade whipped cream. Below is my recipe for what I believe tastes like a Pineapple Dole Whip Donut!

Serves 4

4 Bakery Yeast Donuts (or Gluten Free Donuts)

1 cup Pineapple Juice (or Canned Crushed Pineapple in Juice)

1 Tablespoon Cold Water with 2 tsp Cornstarch mixed in until dissolved

1/4 – 1/2 cup sugar to taste

Heat 1 cup Pineapple Juice in a saucepan. Add Sugar and stir till dissolved. Add the cold water/cornstarch mixture. Stir until thickened. Refrigerate to cool.

WHIPPED TOPPING
1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream

2-4 Tablespoons Sugar

Optional: 2 Tablespoons Toasted Marshmallow Syrup

Mix Heavy Whipping Cream on High gradually adding sugar (to taste) until stiff. If desired add the Toasted Marshmallow Syrup.

(In my first attempt I used a Toasted Meringue for the topping. My family complained that it didn’t taste like a Dole Whip. For a meringue version use 1 egg white with 3 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon Toasted Marshmallow syrup. Mix until peaks form. Pipe meringue onto a parchment paper covered baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. )

ASSEMBLY – Spread Cooled Pineapple Syrup over donut. Top with Whipped Topping. Enjoy
