I was given two 3 month subscriptions to Sensory TheraPlay Subscription Box in exchange for my thoughts. Below is my honest appraisal.

ARE SENSORY TOYS REALLY WORTH IT?

For those of you who are new to my page, I have a 13 year old son who is autistic. I call him Jack-Jack. He is funny and quirky, kind and loveable, and intense and compulsive. He has a smile that melts your heart. And his mental age is about 7-8 years old.

Jack-Jack loves toys, but he plays differently. He rarely plays with something the way it was meant to be played with. He has a few favorite board games – Sorry and Trouble. Marcus (my 14 year old) gets tired of Trouble. Such is the life with brothers, no matter what their ages or disabilities.

It becomes difficult to find new, challenging, and unique toys and games to engage Jack-Jack. Until now. Christina (owner of Sensory TheraPlay and a true blessing in every sense of the word) puts together an awesome box month-after-month. Each and every box is full of awesomeness.

October’s box has Jack-Jack’s favorite item that we have received so far. Let me detail October’s box for you:

CRAZY AARON’S HOLOGRAPHIC MIXED BY ME THINKING PUTTY KIT:

My motto: You can never have enough putty. Jack-Jack loves Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty. And this new kit is no different. He loves to mix it, pull it, stretch it, twist it, etc. And the whole family loves to play with it too.

TANGLE JUNIOR CLASSIC TOY:

This colorful twisting, tangled toy is sure to keep hands busy. Jack-Jack did manage to “break” it with his twisting, but the great thing is that the pieces just snap back together.

SILLY SLIME SUCKERS AND POPLINGS

OH MY!!!! Silly Slime Suckers  (The blue creature and the slime) are seriously awesome. Jack-Jack played with this so much that his slime has dried out. I have to make him more. He loves everything about the Slime Sucker. And he belly laughs the whole time. What Jack-Jack doesn’t know is that this is helping his fine motor skills!

The POPLINGS (the magenta toy) are cute little silicone figures with suction cup feet (and this one’s nose is a suction cup too). Press them down on a surface and pull them back up to hear them pop. My granddaughter loved this little guy that I am looking at getting these for my granddaughters for Christmas.

TUMBLE WONDER:

Stand up this little toy and give it a flick. Watch it tumble end over end across the table, or use your hand to pop it back and forth. We haven’t played with this one much – my fault as I hide some of the items so they can be spread out through the month. I am wondering how this toy will do tumbling down stairs!

U-LACE SHOE LACES:

Put these laces into the shoes and never have to tie shoes again. I will be the first to admit that right now Jack-Jack doesn’t even have a pair of shoes he can use these in. When we get a chance we are going out and buying him shoes to try these out. We have tried another brand before, but Jack-Jack would pull on them and break them. We will see how these hold up.

So are these Sensory Toys Worth the Hype? It seems like everyone has a way to help your child, but you wonder if it really works. My opinion is that THESE TOYS ARE AWESOME! Christina puts together a fantastic box every month. Jack-Jack (and our family) love these toys. Jack-Jack is engaged, and he is working on necessary skills without it seeming like work at all. And the rest of us are having the time of our life. What are you waiting for? These boxes are great – great for kids, great for adults. This subscription box is full of greatness.
