PADDINGTON BEAR 2: MOVIE REVIEW BY A CHRISTIAN MOM

Three years ago, our family went to see the long-awaited movie, Paddington Bear: The Movie. Paddington Bear is based on the book series by Michael Bond and first published in 1958. (Michael Bond died in 2017 at the age of 91). I remember reading my first Paddington Bear book when I was a child. Furthermore, I have read some of these books to my own children, and I suspect my grandchildren will read the delightful books also.

I never expect to like a movie as much as the book, but we were surprised by the first movie (read my review here)! Our family really liked it, but you know what they say about sequels.

Paddington 2 Christian Review – SYNOPSIS

Paddington Bear 2 starts with a little backstory in the jungles in Peru where the little bear with the big heart first meets his aunt and uncle. However, Paddington is now living in London with the Brown family, and he still wears his floppy red hat, blue jacket, and eats orange marmalade sandwiches. Paddington wants to get a special gift for his Aunt Lucy who is living in a retirement home in Peru. Aunt Lucy has always dreamed of visiting London. When Paddington finds a very special pop-up book detailing the most important tourist sites in London, he knows he has to get her the book.

Paddington looks for odd jobs to pay for the book. His first job is in a barber shop, and then he takes a job washing windows. Both of those jobs provide laughs for the audience when Paddington’s childlike interpretation of his jobs get in the way of actually doing the job. Both the comedic value and acting are spot-on in this movie, and Hugh Grant (who also plays an Oompa Loompa in Wonka 2023) is perfect in his role. 

There were several laugh out loud moments, and a few teary scenes. I will admit to tears running down my face toward the end of the movie. A movie that makes me both laugh and cry is a winner in my book. 

PADDINGTON 2 CHRISTIAN REVIEW – MY RECOMMENDATIONS:

At moments this movie is slow-moving, but it is overall delightful. There is some mild rude humor and some dangerous situations, and that is why it has a PG rating. My recommendation is ages 5 and up because of the slow moving parts.

In one scene a sword is drawn and Paddington and his family are threatened. There is also rude humor, and one instance of a “Oh My G-d,” but overall the language is clean.

There are some scenes where Paddington is chasing a bad guy, and scenes where Paddington is being chased. Additionally, there are also scenes in prison, but for the most part those scenes are comedic. Paddington thinks his family has forgotten him and cries in his cell.

Paddington displays such child-like wonder and amazement, and he is just so loveable. But the thing I love most about Paddington is his reminder to us to find the good in everyone, and for this reason I recommend you take your family to see this delightfully entertaining movie.
