Brace Yourself for the Ultimate Whirlwind Adventure

It has been 28 years since the cult-classic Twister. In this sequel/standalone film, moviegoers once again are treated to glimpses of a force of nature that is hated, studied, and respected. In this Twisters Christian Movie Review & Parent Guide, I give you the information you need before viewing this movie with your children.

Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Carter and Glen Powell as Tyler Owens in the 2024 film Twisters

Twisters Christian Movie Review

Studio Synopsis:

This Sumer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with an adrenaline-pumping, big-screen thrill ride that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces.

…a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster, Twister…Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) as equal forces, with opposing motivations, who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures…

My Synopsis:

Kate Carter lives in Oklahoma and wants to be the scientist who tames tornados, but when she has a life-changing experience, she trades in her dreams of subduing tornadoes to tracking them from a distance in New York City.

When she is encouraged to return for just one week because there is “new technology,” she encounters Tyler Owens, who is a YouTube star and bills himself as a “storm wrangler.” Can Kate figure out how to disperse tornadoes?

Twisters Christian Movie Review – What Parents Want to Know

Language:

Several times, God’s name is taken in vain, such as “oh g-d,” “g-d sakes,” and “oh lord.”

Other instances of foul language include h-ll, and a song is sung with the lyrics “highway to h-ll,” and another song, “h-ll no. I ain’t in Kansas anymore.”

Additionally, a-ss, d-man, sh-t, are used in different ways and are used frequently.

Violence:

A person says, “Ever since you got struck by lightning, you’re no fun.”

Several people die. While you don’t see dead bodies, you do see them sucked into a tornado and later people talk about their death.

Additionally, there is flying debris, trucks, a chicken coop flies by, and a chicken lands on a vehicle. There are several explosions.

A person gets a laceration on their leg, and blood is shown. There are several other instances where blood is shown.

Furthermore, this is an intense movie. A couple of towns are shown after tornadoes with houses destroyed. Also, a tornado rips through a town.

Spiritual Content:

When discussing how tornadoes form, one person says, “It’s part science; it’s part religion.”

While not overtly spiritual, one person asks another, “Do you ever wonder why it was us that made it out of there?”

Adult Content:

A couple kisses twice. A woman has a brief dream of being in bed with a man.

A song plays, “Boys are too easy.”

Alcohol is shown being consumed.

Positive Content:

We see several characters who are willing to “give their life” to another person. In fact, the motivation of the main character is to develop early warning systems to save lives.

Additionally, we see that another character uses some of his income to help tornado victims.

Christian Review of Twisters – My Viewing Recommendations

I recently watched Twister and expected a similar film. However, Twisters is much more intense. Since it has been 28 years since the original movie, the film graphics have improved greatly. The tornadoes are much more real. Because of this, it is a very, very intense film. My age recommendation is 13 and up.

If where you live experiences tornadoes, please teach your children what to do when bad weather approaches. Visit the Red Cross to learn about tornado safety.
