Home School in the Woods U.S. Elections Lap-Pak

Politics is such a divisive subject, but it doesn’t have to be that way in your own home. Most people don’t truly understand how elections work, and therefore, they have a problem teaching the election process to their own children. Instead, we let others (or the news) educate our children about how we elect those that will represent us in the United States. When I was asked to review a Home School in the Woods product about the elections, I knew that this was the year to teach voting and the entire process. So did U.S.Elections Lap-Pak meet my expectations?

Teaching about US Elections

What is U.S. Elections Lap-Pak?

The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak is a comprehensive lapbook designed for Grades 3-8. It gives a great overview of the history of elections in the United States. This product gives you the ability to teach the election process to your children in a fun, creative way.

The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak teaches the etymology of the words election and suffrage, but it also teaches about the branches of government, who we vote for, term limits, running a campaign and political parties.

The Three branches of Government

Through this unit on U.S. Elections, your child will learn about the US Election Day throughout the country on a local and state level, but the overall focus on this lap pack is the presidential election.

Things I have Learned About U.S. Elections Lap-Pak

This is a comprehensive unit study about U.S. Elections

While I personally knew all the information regarding the election process, I am thrilled with the knowledge and the information presented here for my children.

The publisher gives a suggested grade level of 3-8, but I feel that it is a wonderfully comprehensive overview for even older students. Coupled with suggestions for additional resources, this can be used for a high school student studying civics.

The publisher has a fantastic Scope and Sequence that gives a great breakdown of what is covered in this lapbook.

How We Used U.S. Elections Lap-Pak to Teach the Elections Process

In our household, we used this to teach our son Jack-Jack briefly about the elections process. Jack-Jack is 15 and is autistic. This study is too advanced for him, and we just did a brief overview of the elections process.

However, after going through it with him, I am going to use this same unit study as an outline for my older son who is taking a civics course this upcoming school year. While it isn’t robust enough for him, I already have books lined up to use alongside this great resource.

Would I Recommend U.S. Elections Lap-Pak for Teaching The Election Process?

I can say categorically that I would use U.S. Elections Lap-Pak for teaching the election process.

However, sing my own children do not love to color many of the pages went uncolored.

I do like the overall layout and process and found great value in Home School in the Woods U.S. Elections Lap-Pak.

FINAL THOUGHTS

“Sure, there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too.” —President Richard Nixon

Teaching the election process can really springboard into discussions about so many other topics such as:

Past Presidents

Famous Presidential Quotes

Immorality

Fraud and Deception

Lying

God appointing rulers

Importance of good men/women running for office

What happens to good men & women when they let power go to their heads.

Why our form of government ensures the greatest freedoms

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” —President John F. Kennedy

While I recommend U.S. Elections Lap-Pak, I also urge you to have open discussions with your children about our election process and how it differs from the elections in other countries. Additionally, it is of grave importance for our children to get involved in politics and that will not happen if good men do nothing!
