SYNOPSIS – PARENT REVIEW OF DISNEY’S RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

Since the original Wreck-It Ralph, Vanellope and Ralph are best friends who spend their time after work together. But Vanellope wants more. She feels like something is missing. When her game is shut down because of a broken steering wheel, Ralph takes her into the internet to find the part. However, Vanellope falls in love with the fast-paced, exciting world she finds inside. Will this destroy Vanellope and Ralph’s friendship?

THE GOOD

This movie shows the real adventure of getting sucked into the internet. The internet is a overgrown and crowded city full of people rushing to get to their destination. This depiction is spot-on. There were many moments I thought that Disney had such a cool way of showing what we get sucked into when we sit down at a computer, pick up our phones, and log-in with a device.

Ralph Breaks the Internet Parent Review
INTO THE INTERNET – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2,” Vanellope von Schweetz and Wreck-It Ralph leave the arcade world behind to explore the uncharted and thrilling world of the internet. In this image, Vanellope and Ralph have a breathtaking view of the world wide web, a seemingly never-ending metropolis filled with websites, apps and social media networks. On a quest to save Vanellope’s game, how will these two misfits ever succeed in this vast new world? Featuring the voices of Sarah Silverman as Vanellope and John C. Reilly as Ralph, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet: 2018 Disney All Rights Reserved.

THE BAD

This movie may work for children and middle schoolers, but it doesn’t work for the general population. In fact, many of the pop references will be missed by most people. And my prediction is in a few years, a good many of them will be forgotten altogether. This movie reminds me of the Emoji movie and with the speed of changes occurring on the internet will quickly become dated.

Things parents may want to be aware of: There is an online game called Slaughter Race – (Grand Theft Auto-esque Apocalypse edition) and the characters are shady. There are weapons, burning people alive, explosions and creepy clowns. The movie depicts a virus as an oversized dark millipede with a big eye and smoke surrounding it. There is a giant underworld figure that has a creepy brother in his chest.

Movie Review for Ralph Breaks the Internet

There is plenty of potty humor – butt, doody, etc.; insults – stupid, dummy, stink brain; and the phrases Good Lord, Holy Cow, Oh God.

Ralph’s virus creates tons of Ralph’s that are insecure and are trying to get Vanellope. This giant Ralph made up of lots of little Ralphs is creepy.

Vanellope reads a word wrong on the internet. The word is lingerie. There are a few other things like this that you may have to explain to your children.

THE UGLY

I found this movie incredibly stupid. I cannot say it any other way. The on-screen references, the way they portray the internet, the images they use. It just didn’t work. I am a Disney enthusiast, however, this movie will go down as a dud.

A Mother's Random Thoughts Movie Review for Ralph Breaks the Internet

THE TEACHABLE MOMENTS FROM RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

There are plenty of opportunities to use this movie to teach your children about things they may find online. Ralph and Vanellope try to make money quickly in seedy underworld type exchanges. They eventually find they can make money on BuzzTube. These are excellent ways to teach your children about the ways people make money online. Many of those ways include just plain deceit and ripping people off.

Ralph makes all his money by creating stupid videos. The movie shows people at work just sharing videos and mindlessly watching what is put in front of them. In the internet world, pop-ups were used to get people to move from what they were doing to something else. This “sucking people in” is a great time waster. Talk to your children about setting limits, not following pop-ups to see the latest and greatest game or video. What you put on the internet can hurt people.

MY RECOMMENDATION

Ages 8-14 will like this movie. The rest of us will tolerate it because our children want to see it. Children younger than ages 5-6 may be frightened by some scenes.

This won’t be the worst movie of 2018. But when my daughter texted me to ask what movie I was seeing, I responded, “Ralph Stupid Internet.” Don’t believe me – go see it. If you don’t agree with my assessment, let me know below why I am wrong. But be careful – Comments can hurt!
