Are You Doing Enough to Protect Your Child

Every generation has had their worries. For my grandparents, it was influenza, diseases, and dying during childbirth. As medicine advanced, these no longer became daily worries. My parents were worried about wars, nuclear bombs, and dictators. But through the last 50 years, the world has become a safer place, and those things are no longer on our regular worry list. Today, we worry about predators and identity theft. These are things we can do something about, but are you doing enough to protect your child?

I often write about autism and how to navigate the world around us: what will happen to your child after you are gone? I also write about movies and how to make sure what your child watches is safe for them. But something I haven’t thought about until recently was my child’s identity. While there is so much information about sexual assault against children and online grooming, there is little about child identity theft. However, your child is far more likely to have their identity stolen, and when it happens, it can go unnoticed for years.

My parents had little control about the things they worried about, and I have felt that way too. Because it was virtually impossible for you as a parent to monitor your children’s identities. Something or someone had to let you know that their social security number had been used, or when your child reached adulthood, they would find out that their number had been used for fraudulent purposes. And then the clean-up began.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR CHILD?

Can you even protect your child’s identity? In 2018, there were 60 million victims of identity theft. Over 1,000,000 of those were children. It is estimated that 25% of all children will be a victim before they turn 18. And by the time you find out, it will have been too late.

Twenty Five percent of children will be the victim of identity theft by the age of 18

Wouldn’t you rather plan for it in advance? Clean up on the back-end after something has happened is not only time-consuming, but it is also emotionally devastating. The violation one feels when you find out that someone has used your credit card is one thing, but knowing they went after your kids — well, that is a whole other ball game.
