A World of Creativity With Jack Black and Jason Momoa
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time. While it was first released in 2009, it would be two more years before its first full release. Since then, it has been continuously worked on and now includes smartphone and tablet versions. Personally, I have a few children who were sucked into the Minecraft world, and I am a little shocked that it has taken so long to make a Minecraft movie. In A Minecraft Movie Christian Movie Review & Parent Guide, I give you the information you need before viewing this movie with your children.

A Minecraft Movie Christian Movie Review
Studio Synopsis:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, “A Minecraft Movie,” directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time.
The film also stars Emma Myers (“Wednesday”), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Sebastian Hansen (“Just Mercy, “Lisey’s Story”), with Jennifer Coolidge.
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
My Synopsis:
Steve is forced to wait until he is an adult to do what he truly loves which is mine. When he enters the mine, he finds a portal that takes him into the world of Minecraft. However, he closes off the portal by sending Dennis (the wolf-dog) back to our world with the orb that opens the portal. Dennis places it under Steve’s bed. Eventually, the contents of Steve’s house are sold at auction that Garrett buys. Garrett, Henry, Natalie and Dawn venture into Minecraft world and meet up with Steve. Can they save the overworld from the inhabitants of the Nether world?
A Minecraft Movie Christian Movie Review – What Parents Want to Know
Language:
Overall, the language is fairly clean. Three uses of “oh my g-d” and use of h-ll. Additionally, some milder language such as “oh my gosh,” “son of a biscuit,” and sucks is used several times. Furthermore, there are several uses of “frick,” heck, butt, and idiot.
Violence:
This film has plenty of explosions, “video game style” fighting, and bad guys versus good guys battles. Additionally, stabbings occur. When the piglins are stabbed they become a cooked pork chop.
An Overworld villager crosses over into our world and is hit by a car.
A fast-food restaurant serves roasted chicken which are cooked alive with flaming hot lava. While it is meant to be funny, and little is shown onscreen, some children may be traumatized by this.
Spiritual Content:
To get to the world of Minecraft, a portal is opened with an orb (Orb of Dominance) which is actually cube-shaped. Within the Minecraft arena, there is the Overworld and the Nether world. The Overworld is the cute block-shaped area where you can build and play. However, the Nether world is full of evil piglins, a witch pig, and sorcery. Additionally, there are comments made about a character having the “heart of a demon.”
Zombies are also a part of the Minecraft world, and they appear at night which happens quite frequently.
Furthermore, the Nether is referred to as a “hellhole,” and it is dark and ruled by the “witch pig.” This region definitely looks like what you would think hell looks like.
Other Content:
A woman makes continuous references to being recently divorced. When she first meets The Garbageman, she exclaims, “You can bag me up and take me to the curb anytime.”
Additionally, she makes several comments about her marriage such as, “The fire went out on our marriage.” When she meets an Overworld villager who doesn’t speak English, she invites him to dinner. Over dinner, she invites him “to my house for dessert.” And he raises his eyebrows in an understanding way. At the end of the film, they announce they are getting married.
Someone makes a reference to their mother dying.
Potty humor is used throughout the film with multiple references to buttcheeks and poo.
Positive Content:
The entire premise of the world of Minecraft is that you can create and build, and using your imagination is a good thing. Eventually, the creative characters in the film decide to return to our world and use their creative genius to improve the real world. In fact, a character makes the comment, “It is harder to create than destroy.”

A Minecraft Movie Christian Movie Review – My Viewing Recommendations
Overall, this is cheesy and overdone, but it is relatively harmless. However, I probably missed some innuendos and references, and it does have plenty of potty humor. Would I want my 6-year-old repeating some of these movie lines? That would be a NO! However, I am fully aware that most kids will enjoy this film.
With the violence in the film, I would recommend A Minecraft Movie for 5-6 and up, but with the warning that some younger viewers may be afraid of the piglins and some of the fight scenes. While this isn’t the best film of the year, my theater erupted in cheers at the end of the film.
If you want to watch a “video game” based movie, I would recommend Sonic as a far superior film. However, I do recognize that if you do have a child that loves Minecraft, they will want to see this film. And judging from my local movie theater, I do expect this film to perform better than Snow White!
Finally, if your child doesn’t play Minecraft, research before delving into this world!
